How to Get Free Microsoft Virus Protection

Virus protection is essential; using an Inter-connected PC without virus protection opens you up to having private information, such as credit card numbers, stolen and losing important files on your hard drive due to corruption. There are many free anti-virus programs available for the PC, including Microsoft's own Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download that provides your computer with the following security features in one program: virus protection, spyware protection and protection from other harmful content. Microsoft Security Essentials is available for Windows Vista and 7 computers.


Navigate to the Microsoft Security Essential website (see Resources).


Click the blue "Download" button located in the center of the page.


Select your version of Windows using the "Windows Version" drop-down menu next to the language you want to download Microsoft Security Essentials in. Click "Download."


Select a location on your hard drive to save the file to.


Double-click the mseinstall.exe file when the download is complete. Click "Run" if prompted.


Click "Next" followed by "I Accept."


Select whether you would like to join the Customer Experience Improvement Program. Click "Next."


Click "Install" to install Microsoft Security Essentials. Click "Finish" when the installation is complete.


  • check Your copy of Windows 7 must be genuine and registered with Microsoft to download and use Microsoft Security Essentials.
  • check Microsoft Security Essentials will automatically open; in the future, you can open it by double-clicking its icon on the desktop.
