How to Make an Image Slide Show in SWiSH Max

by Charles Carswell

You can create colorful, stunning slideshow images for your website with Swish Max using your photos, graphics and drawings. Swish Max allows you to sequentially display images using fade-in and fade-out effects and many other techniques with just a couple of clicks with your mouse. Many on-line portfolios and digital albums, advertisements and presentations are created in this fashion using Swish Max. You can build a simple slide show and easily add sophisticated and other interesting effects such as user-interactive rollovers, colorful animations and image swapping controlled by buttons of your design.

Launch your copy of Swish Max. If prompted, choose the option of “Create a new empty movie.” Under the “Panels” tab, click “Movie.” Choose white for the background color and make the width and height 450 pixels by 350 pixels respectively. Make sure the “Frames per second (FPS)” is 12 and the frame rate is variable. Set the “View” option at 100 percent.

Insert your first image by either dragging it into the canvas or choose “Import” from the “File” tab on the main menu. The image name will appear on the “Timeline” directly beneath “Scene 1.”

Click the “Add Effect” button and choose “Fade” and then “Fade In” from the resulting drop-down menu. The “Fade In” for the current image will span ten (one to 10) frames on the time line. This is the duration of the time that the image will appear. The default is 12 frames per second which can be changed to shorter or longer, depending on your preference. On the same time line row as your image, click your mouse 20 frames away from the end. This will leave that frame filled with a blue square.

Click the “Add Effect” button again and this time choose “Fade” and then “Fade Out” from the resulting drop-down menu. This is your first transition image that will fade in and fade out with duration of 40 seconds. You can test the effect by clicking on the “Play Movie” icon on the main menu (It’s the first black arrow on the same menu. When you finish viewing, click “Stop” (It’s the black square immediately to the left of the “Play Movie” icon.

Insert your next image in the same fashion as you did in Step 2. Make sure the “Fade In” for this image is about half-way past the “Fade Out” frames of the previous image. For example, if the “Fade Out” for the previous Image ends at frame 40 then make your next “Fade In” start at frame 35. This will ensure a smooth visual transition between fading images. Again, click the “Add Effect” button after inserting your next image and repeat Steps 3 and 4. Repeat several more times to accommodate the number of images you wish to display. See Tip 5a.

Click “File” on the main menu and then “Save As”. The Swish Max program will save the program source code (SWI) and the executable file (SWF) in your choice of directories. Simply follow the prompts and your Image Slide Show is created.

  • check Tip 5a: Try not to include too many images in one Slide Show or it will degrade the performance of your output by making the load time extremely slow. You should try to keep the number of images less than 15 and each image less than 50k for better performance.
