How to Clean Corrupted Files off My Computer

by TS Jordan

Corrupted files are files that have been damaged because of drive failure, viruses or other physical or virtual system maladies. Cleaning these files off of your Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer can be done by repairing them using the disk checking tool that is included with your operating system. The scanning and cleaning process will take around 20 minutes to over an hour, depending on the size of your drive.

Click "Start" and select "Run." You need only press "Start" on Vista and 7 computers.

Type "cmd" in the "Run" box for XP or in the "Search" box for Vista and 7 and press "OK."

Type "chkdsk x: /f," replacing "x" with the letter of the drive containing corrupted files.

Press "Y" if asked whether you wish to scan at system reboot.

Reboot the system to begin the cleaning.
