How to Get Rid of Hidden Popups

by J.S. Copper

Unwanted popup windows are typically caused by instances of spyware, malware or adware -- all types of malicious software. This software is often installed on your computer without your knowledge or consent, hiding itself so as to make removal difficult. The best way to remove these popups from your computer is to use an antispyware utility to scan your hard drive for the malicious software and then safely delete it.

Download and install an antispyware utility. Lavasoft provides a free version of Ad-Aware; Spybot Search & Destroy is available for free; and Microsoft provides Microsoft Security Essentials (see Resources).

Launch the antispyware utility. Quit any other running applications so as to not interfere with the scan and spyware removal.

Select a "Full System Scan" (sometimes referred to as a "Deep Scan"). If prompted, select the "C:" drive.

Click "Start" to begin the scan. Depending on the size of your drive, this may take a little while.

Select all detected spyware and malware and click "Remove/Delete." The application will remove the malicious software.

Restart the computer.
