How to Create a 16x16 Icon

by Chad Buleen

Generally speaking, many websites use 16-by-16 pixel icons for user account photos and other types of images. While design programs that you can purchase allow you to create 16-by-16 icons, you don't need to buy a photo-editing program to create a 16-by-16 icon. All Microsoft Windows operating systems include access to the Microsoft Paint program, which allows you to adjust image sizes.

Click "Start" and type "Paint" into the "Search" box. Press "Enter."

Click "File" and "Open." Browse to the image you want to make a 16-by-16 icon and double-click it. The image opens on the screen.

Click the "Image" menu and click "Attributes."

Click the "Pixels" radio button under "Units." Type "16" into the width box and "16" into the height box.

Click "OK."

Press "Ctrl" and "S" to save the icon.
