Is Tumblr Free to Use?

by Jane Williams

Tumblr is a blogging website designed to enable easy sharing of your interests, such as photos, music and videos. Site users can share your posts by reblogging them, which spreads your posted content to others. Unlike other blogging platforms, Tumblr's design focuses more on visual content and the ease of sharing it, as opposed to long text posts. Anyone can use Tumblr, for personal or business purposes, and there is no charge for the service.

Free Registration and Use

Part social networking, part blogging site, Tumblr provides an avenue for the sharing of ideas and visuals. To join the site, you must enter a valid email address, create a password and choose your username. This name becomes part of your primary blog's URL, and under your primary account you can create as many secondary blogs as you'd like. Choose a theme, change settings to your liking and start sharing. Tumblr offers these services free of charge, so you will not need a credit card or other financial information while signing up.

Premium Blog Themes

Although Tumblr offers a variety of free themes for your blog, you can also purchase a theme that offers a specific design or layout you like. As of January 2014, premium themes range in price from $9 to $49, and are available in Tumblr's collection of available themes. Just like with free themes, you can preview a premium theme to get an idea of how it will look live. To purchase a premium theme, click the "Purchase Theme" button in the theme's preview window and enter your credit card information. You only need to pay for your theme once, after which it's free for you to use for as long as you like.

Custom Domain Name

When you sign up for Tumblr, your username becomes part of your blog's URL. If you choose ImGreat as a username, your Tumblr URL is ImGreat.Tumblr.com. You can use this free address to direct people to your Tumblr site, but you can also purchase a custom domain name from a registrar such as GoDaddy, Bluehost or Host Gator and configure it to point to your blog. Redirecting your custom domain to your Tumblr site requires altering the configuration settings on your registrar's website, then selecting "Use a Custom Domain Name" under the Settings menu of your Tumblr account. You'll need to renew your custom domain at least every year to keep use of it.

Business Sponsored Posts

All Tumblr accounts are free to use, but if you have an account for your business you can purchase advertising space to have your posts appear to your desired audience within the site. Sponsored posts can appear in other users' streams, on the dashboard or in a directory called Spotlight. These ads appear to the demographics you select, such as a specific location, age range or gender. You are only charged when these ads are reblogged, followed or liked, or if someone clicks on the ad itself.
