How to Write a PDF Bookby David Weedmark
Once you write a book, you can convert it into PDF format. PDF format allows the book to be read on any computer with a PDF viewer, regardless of its operating system, as well as on portable devices such as iPhones, iPads and Kindle e-readers.
Write your book with the word-processing software you are most comfortable with. Use headers and footers on each page and include page numbers. Insert graphics and images into your manuscript to illustrate data or abstract concepts.
Establish the order of your book. Much like a house, a good book should have a basic structure planned beforehand. Write down the main sections of your book and arrange them in the order that makes the for the most effective construction.
Make notes for each chapter with possible revisions. For example, you may think of several ideas you want to include, but you do not want to break the flow of writing to address tangents. Notes can help organize your thoughts, identify potential weaknesses with your text and decide what to leave in or take out of the manuscript.
Write the book for one person who typifies your intended audience. Think of that person as you write. Personal memoirs written with a grandchild in mind will read differently than a technical manual for a computer technician. This will also help you maintain a consistent style of writing throughout the book.
Evaluate the software you already have on your computer that would best suit your manuscript. Numerous authors use a word processor, such as Microsoft Word, to format manuscripts. You can convert your book to PDF using Word's Export tool, or Adobe Acrobat.
Find an online conversion website to export your finished document into PDF format if you cannot justify the expense of purchasing Adobe Acrobat, or a version of Word with an export feature. PDF Online can export Word, PowerPoint, and text documents to PDF format.
Download a free 30-day trial of Adobe InDesign to lay out your manuscript. You can use InDesign to combine pictures and graphics into layout, then export it to a PDF. Plan on spending a few hours learning how to use the software. If you plan on writing several books, InDesign may be a good investment.
Use an online publishing service such as Lulu if you plan to sell your PDF book. Lulu will convert your document into a PDF, and make it available for sale online for free. Lulu makes a small commission from each sale of your book. Lulu will also make your book available for publishing in print and help you distribute it to booksellers, or convert it to ebook format to sell through Apple's iBooks store.
