How to Use the Scanner on an HP Printer

Your HP printer may also be capable of scanning documents and photos if it is an all-in-one printer. Whether you run Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 on your computer, you will find that there are at least a few different options for scanning items with your HP printer.

Scan Using the HP Solution Center

If your printer was made before 2011, and you don't have Windows 10, you may be able to use the HP Solution Center software that came with your printer, provided you installed it on your computer.

Open the scanner cover. Place the item that you want to scan face down on the scanner glass. Close the scanner cover.

Click the "Start" button, point to "All Programs" and open the "HP" folder. Double-click the "HP Solution Center." The Solution Center window opens.

Click the "Scan Picture" button if you want to scan a picture or a document that you won't need to edit. Click the "Scan Document" button if you are scanning a document that you may wish to edit later in a word processing program or similar application.

Select a location to which you want to scan the item, such as a folder on your computer or an email application. Click "Scan." Select the file type you want to use to save the scan, enter a name for the scan, change other settings as desired and click "OK." Click "Finish" to complete the scan.

Scan With Windows 10 Fax and Scan App

Open the scanner cover and place the item that you want to scan face down on the scanner glass. Close the scanner cover.

Click the "Source" button in the Windows 10 Fax and Scan App and select your HP printer as the source.

Click "File type" and select what type of file you would like the scanned item to be saved as. The available options include BMP, JPG, PNG and TIF.

Click the "Show more" button to access advanced scanning options where you can set things like resolution, brightness and contrast.

Click the "Preview" button to view a preview of what the scan will look like.

Click the "Scan" button to scan your item.

Scan With Windows 7 Live Photo Gallery

Open the scanner cover. Place the item that you want to scan face down on the scanner glass. Close the scanner cover.

Click the "Start" button. Type "photo" into the search box at the bottom of the Start menu and select "Windows Live Photo Gallery" from the results.

Click the "File" button and select "Import From Camera or Scanner." Choose your HP printer and click "Import."

Select the file type in which you'll save the scan, enter a name for the scan and change other settings as desired. Click "Scan." The HP scanner scans the item directly to the Live Gallery window.

Scan With Windows 7 Fax and Scan

Open the scanner cover. Place the item that you want to scan face down on the scanner glass. Close the scanner cover.

Click the "Start" button and type "fax" into the search box at the bottom of the Start menu. Select "Windows Fax and Scan" from the results.

Click the "New Scan" button on the application toolbar. Select the type of item you are scanning and click "Scan." The HP scanner scans the item directly to the Fax and Scan window.
