How to Use Pandora Radio Streaming on Your TV
By John Lister
Pandora's streaming music service works like a personalized radio station, selecting songs that share musical characteristics with songs and artists that you have indicated you like. Originally designed for use on computer Web browsers and then mobile devices, you can also listen to Pandora on your TV set using a variety of methods.
Browser
Some smart TVs allow you to access the Internet through a special browser, meaning you can type in the details of the website you want to visit. Alternatively, you can use a browser on several game consoles such as the Xbox, PlayStation and Wii. The big hold-up here is that the Pandora website uses Adobe Flash for streaming music, and some TVs don't support Flash and don't allow the user to install it, while game consoles may only support older editions of Flash that are incompatible.
Cable and Satellite
If you get your TV services from DIRECTV, Dish Network or Verizon FiOS TV, you can use a dedicated Pandora application on your TV through your receiver box. Depending on your supplier, you may need to use the latest model of receiver and install the app through the on-screen menus. You can log in to the dedicated app with your existing Pandora account details.
Blu-Ray
Several models of Blu-ray player include support for Pandora, though you need to ensure that the player is connected to the Internet to use it. Blu-ray manufacturers supporting Pandora include Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba. Generally, any model which supports Internet apps should be able to run Pandora, though check before buying for specific model details.
TVs
Some smart TVs either ship with or allow you to install the Pandora app. These include select models from JVC, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba. Note that your TV must have an Internet connection, either through an Ethernet cable to your router, or via Wi-Fi -- which may require an additional purchase of an adapter.
AirPlay
Apple's AirPlay service can connect your iOS device, such as an iPad, to a TV through a device called Apple TV. When you run the Pandora app on your iOS device, you can stream the content to your TV set by pressing the "AirPlay" button in the app. This button is displayed to the right of the music player controls or the volume bar, depending on whether you have the app as the active window on your iOS device.
