How to Update a Harmon Kardon GPS System
By William Pullman
Harmon Kardon releases updates for its GPS receivers to correct programming bugs and add new features to the software. These updates are installed using an application distributed on the Harmon Kardon website, and the procedure requires the mini-USB-to-USB cable shipped with the receiver. Unlike some devices that update in just a few seconds, the process for Harmon Kardon GPS receivers takes some time. Set aside at least 30 minutes to update the software in your GPS device.
Navigate to the support page on the Harmon Kardon website (link in Resources). Once there, click "Find My Product" and select your GPS unit from the drop-down menu.
Click "Product Updates" and then click on the ZIP file under the Software heading to download it to your computer. If the Product Updates page does not display a ZIP file, then no updates are available for your GPS receiver.
Double-click on the ZIP file and then double-click the EXE file in the folder to launch the software updater.
Push a paperclip into the Reset hole on the bottom of the GPS receiver; then press and hold the "Power" button until the Service screen displays.
Tap "Update from PC," "Applications" and "OK."
Plug the small end of the mini-USB cable into the USB port on your GPS receiver; plug the standard USB connector on the other end of the cable into an available USB port on your computer. Click "Next" in the software updater.
Select your GPS model from the drop-down menu, and then click "Next" in the software updater to copy the files to your computer.
Click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the Windows system tray. Then click "Eject x," replacing "x" with the name of your GPS receiver.
Unplug the receiver from the USB cable. Press and hold the "Power" button to turn off the device, and then press the "Power" button to turn it on again. Plug the USB cable back into the receiver's USB port and click "Next" in the software updater when the receiver displays a message to reconnect the device to the computer.
Click "Yes" to update the receiver. When the update is complete, a message will prompt you to disconnect the receiver. Use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon to eject the device, and then unplug the USB cable.
Follow the setup wizard's prompts on the receiver to complete the update.
