How to Update DirectX

by Aaron Wein

DirectX is a type of software included in Windows operating systems designed to enhance gaming in PCs. It is important to keep your version of DirectX up-to-date to avoid running into errors when playing new games. Windows comes with a program called "Windows Update" that updates all of your Microsoft software. Run the program to have Windows automatically find and install important software updates for DirectX.

1

Click "Start."

2

Click "Control Panel."

3

Choose "System and Security."

4

Select "Windows Update."

5

Click "Check for updates" located in the left pane. Windows briefly scans for available updates, then presents a list of items. You must be connected to the Internet in order for the program to scan for updates.

6

Place checks next to the DirectX updates. If none are listed, then there are no updates for DirectX.

7

Click "OK" to download and install the updates.

Tip

  • Your computer can automatically download DirectX updates whenever available. From the "Windows Update" menu, choose "Change settings." Choose "Install updates automatically," then click "OK." This ensures your DirectX software is always up-to-date, eliminating the need to manually go through the process.
