How to Update an Apple iPhone From a Computer

by Aaron Charles

Your iPhone is programmed to update automatically when you access the Software Updates section of your phone's Settings menu. However, if you don't have an adequate phone signal or any access to a Wi-Fi network, the iPhone can't wirelessly download any information. In such cases, you can connect your iPhone to any computer that has a USB port and the latest version of iTunes installed on it. The iTunes program will recognize your phone and then provide the necessary gateway for feeding the latest iPhone updates right into your iPhone.

Open iTunes or download the latest version from the iTunes home page (see Resources).

Connect your iPhone to the computer with an iPhone-compatible USB cable.

Open iTunes and select your iPhone under "Devices" in the sidebar menu. Click the "Summary" tab and then the "Check for Update" button. This will install any updates on your iPhone.
