How to Unlock Your Phone If You Forgot the Password

by Tamara Runzel

Many cell phones now hold more than just a contact list of phone numbers. Smartphones can store emails and calendar appointments, send emails, browse the Internet and sync with your computer. One way to protect the information on your phone is through a password or lock code. This prevents anyone who doesn't know the code from accessing your personal information. While a password is a good security measure, it can also be a hassle if you forget the code. If you're locked out from your phone, you can try a few options depending upon the model you have.

Step 1

Enter the last four digits of your phone number. The unlock codes for most phones is originally set to these numbers, although most service providers have you change it shortly after you purchase your phone.

Step 2

Try "1234" if your phone is still locked. This is the generic unlock code for many models.

Step 3

Enter "0000" as another possibility. This is another generic code that may work for your phone model.

Step 4

Go online to your service provider's website and enter an email address if one is associated with the phone. If your phone has email capability, the service provider will sometimes send you a new code in an email.

Call your service provider if none of the above codes work and you still cannot remember your password. They will reset it for you and give you the new code.
