How to Turn Off the Numlock Key on a Compaq Laptop
By Stephen Lilley
The "Num Lock" key on a Compaq laptop computer's keyboard is located at the top of the number pad on the right-hand side of the unit. When turned on, the key allows you to use the number pad keys to enter numerical digits into your computer. When turned off, the number pad is disabled and you must use the number keys above the main letter keys if you want to enter digits onto your computer.
Step 1
Examine the indicator light above the "Num Lock" key on your Compaq laptop computer's keyboard (if applicable). If the indicator light is an orange color, the "Num Lock" key is turned on and can be turned off. If this light is not illuminated, the "Num Lock" key is already off.
Step 2
Tap the "Num Lock" key one time. This will turn off the key and disable the use of the key pad.
Step 3
Click inside any text field on your computer (inside a text document, in the address bar on your Web browser, in a text field on a Web page, etc.) and attempt to use the number keys on your Compaq laptop computer's number pad. If the keys do not work when you press them, this confirms that the "Num Lock" key is off. If the keys do work, you need to press "Num Lock" again to turn off the key.
