If you have purchased some high-end speakers to attach to your laptop, you may want to disable the internal speakers in the machine. This will ensure that all sound resources are being directed to your new speakers, not to the laptop's internal speakers. The Windows operating system makes it extremely easy to disable your computer's speakers, a process that takes about two minutes to complete.

Step 1

Click the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of your desktop. Scroll up and click "Control Panel."

Step 2

Click the "Sound" menu (speaker icon). Highlight the "Speakers" selection in the window that appears. Click the "Properties" button.

Click the "Device usage" drop-down menu. Choose "Don't use this device (disable)." Click the "Apply" button, then click the "OK" button.
