How to Turn Off Ad-Aware

by John Smith

If you browse the Internet without any security software, you run the risk of infecting your computer with a virus. Ad-Aware is a free program developed by Lavasoft that detects and removes unwanted files such as viruses, spyware and malware. The program runs in the background and can hog system resources if you are running too many programs at the same time. If you want to turn the Ad-Aware program off but not remove it completely from your PC, you can change the settings so that it is disabled upon start-up.

Disable After Start-up

Click on the bottom right of your screen to access the program taskbar. Click on the arrow symbol to access the programs currently running on your PC.

Right-click on the "Ad-Aware" icon, and then select "Exit Ad-Aware."

Click "Yes" when asked "Are you sure you want to disable Ad-Watch Live! and completely shut down Ad-Aware?" Ad-Aware will turn off temporarily, but you must repeat this process every time you restart your computer.

Disable Permanently

Click "Start," and then type "MSCONFIG" in the "Search" bar. Select "MSCONFIG" under the "Programs" section of the search results.

Click on the "Startup" tab.

Scroll down and find the "Lavasoft Ad-Aware" program. Uncheck the box beside this program and click "Apply."

Close the "MSCONFIG window and restart the computer. Ad-Aware will now be disabled upon startup and will only run if you manually start the program.
