How to Transfer Contacts From a Motorola to an LG Cell Phone

By Christina Shaffer

Whether your cell phone has been lost or damaged, or you've decided to upgrade, you don't have to worry about losing important data, such as contacts in your mobile address book. Depending on the model of your old Motorola and new LG phone, you can choose from a variety of options that will enable you to transfer your contact list easily from one cell phone to the other. Using a cellular service provider's online backup service such as the Verizon's "Backup Assistant" is often the easiest way to transfer contacts, but this method will only work for if you've previously used the service to backup your address book online.

Using a SIM Card:

Step 1

Remove the SIM card from your Motorola phone. The SIM card is a small chip that is located under the battery in your cell phone. After you've removed the SIM card from your Motorola phone, remove the SIM card from your LG phone.

Step 2

Insert the SIM card from your LG phone into your Motorola phone. Turn on the Motorola phone.

Step 3

Press the "Menu" key and select the "Address Book" option.

Step 4

Select "Options" by pressing the right soft key. The "Select Multiple to" option will appear on the screen. Choose the "Select Multiple To" option and then select "Copy to SIM to Phone."

Step 5

Remove the SIM card that you placed in your Motorola phone and insert it in your LG phone. After inserting the SIM card, turn on your LG phone.

Step 6

Click the "Menu" key on your LG phone and select the "Address Book" option.

Step 7

Select "Options" and choose the "SIM Management" option.

Step 8

Select the "Copy from SIM" option and choose "Select All."

Select the "Copy" option. Your contacts will be transferred from your SIM card to your LG phone.

Using a Provider's Backup Service:

Step 1

Open your preferred Web browser and go to your cell phone carrier's website. Once there, click on the "My Account" link and log in to your account.

Step 2

Select the backup option offered by your carrier, such as Verizon's "Backup Assistant." Depending on your carrier, the name of the backup service will vary. After selecting the backup option, a list of your cell phone contacts will appear on the screen.

Click on the "Sync to Phone" or "Synchronization" button to begin transferring your online address book to your LG phone.

Using Third-Party Software

Step 1

Download a free application such as "BitPim," which allows you to manage and sync your cell phone contacts. Install the application on your computer. Then, connect your Motorola phone to your PC using the USB cable provided with the phone.

Step 2

Launch BitPim or whatever software program you've installed. The application will automatically recognize your connected cell phone.

Step 3

Select the option to import data from your phone, such as "Get Phone Data." Then, select the data you want to import from your phone. Depending on the software, you may be able to upload ringtones, memos and saved text messages in addition to your phone book.

Step 4

Click "OK" to begin importing the contacts from your Motorola address book. After importing your contacts, disconnect the Motorola phone from your computer.

Step 5

Connect your LG phone to the computer using the USB cable provided with that phone.

Click on the option to export your phone book, such as "Send Phone Data," in the software you've installed. You may be asked to select the data you want to transfer. Check the box next to "Phone Book" and click "OK." Your contacts will be transferred to your LG phone.
