How to Sync iTunes Library to Your iPod

IPod and iTunes software are configured to discourage users from copying music files from their iPod onto a computer. This restriction prevents the spread of pirated music. But if your PC crashes and you lose your music library, the collection on your iPod may be all you have left. There is a way to retrieve music from your iPod without paying for a third-party utility.

Note: These instructions are intended for PC.

With iTunes closed, connect the iPod to your computer using the USB cable. Note: If iTunes tries to open automatically, quickly "x" out of the window. This is to avoid auto-syncing the iPod with a blank or lacking library.

In "My Computer," locate the iPod under "Devices with Removable Storage." Double-click.

Under the "Tools" menu at the top of the screen, select "Folder Options." Click the "View" tab. Scroll down and ensure that "Show Hidden Files and Folders" is selected.

The iPod will show two or three folders, one of them called "Music." Copy the Music folder to your desktop.

Disconnect the iPod from the computer and open iTunes. Under the file menu, select "Add folder to Library." Browse and select the copied Music folder on your desktop. Once iTunes has copied your library, re-connect the iPod. When prompted, select the "Erase and sync" option.
