A Sylvania LC420SS8 That Won't Turn on

by Eoghan McCloskey

HDTVs like the Sylvania LC420ss8 can often experience technical malfunctions like not displaying a picture, audio or visual distortion or degradation or even a failure to power on at all. Sometimes this can be an indication of a major malfunction on the TV. But sometimes the cause is simpler and can be resolved using a basic procedure. So, before spending money on TV service, try some troubleshooting on your own in order to restore full functionality to the TV.

Press the power button on the side button panel of the LC420SS8. The power button is the top-most button of the button panel located on the right side of the screen. If you see the standby LED, the leftmost LED on the front of the screen, illuminate, the TV has powered on and you will need to troubleshoot the TV remote for a loss of functionality.

Unplug the TV's power cable from the outlet or power strip into which it is plugged and leave unplugged for 30 seconds. Plug the power cord back in and again try to power the TV on. Use this procedure particularly if there has been a recent power outage in your home.

Plug the TV's power cord into a different outlet to test for a "dead" outlet. If you use a power strip for your home entertainment system, plug the cord into a different slot on the power strip or unplug it from the power strip altogether and plug into an electrical outlet. Any "dead" outlets should be examined by an electrician. If the TV still does not power on at this point, contact Sylvania technical support or have the TV serviced.
