How to Scan a Document to a Computer in Windows 7

By Tara Cantore

Windows Fax and Scan is a component of Windows 7 that is capable of retrieving documents and photos from your scanner and storing them as files in Windows. All editions of Windows 7 come equipped with this feature. Windows Fax and Scan categorizes documents and images separately; they are handled and processed differently by the software program.

Press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu. Click "All Programs," then click "Windows Fax and Scan."

Click "Scan" on the lower-left pane of the "Windows Fax and Scan" window.

Click "New Scan" on the toolbar to open the "New Scan" dialog.

Click "Profile," then click "Documents."

Click "Preview" to see how your document will appear. If you are not happy with the result, adjust the document in the scanner or move the sliders on the screen; doing so adjusts the clarity and thickness of the document's text.

Click "Scan" when you are satisfied with the preview image. The document will be scanned into Windows Fax and Scan.
