How to Open an AIM Account

You don't have to subscribe to AOL in order to use their instant messaging service called AIM. An AIM account allows you to exchange messages online with friends and colleagues. You can open up a free AIM account at any time.

Go to the AIM.com website. Once you log on the website, you'll see information on the latest version of AIM available (see Resources below).

Click on "Sign Up" from the main menu. The next page that details the benefits of an AIM account. Besides the ability to use the AIM instant messaging service, you'll get a free AIM email box.

Pick a screen name. Your screen name is how you instant message to other users through AIM. Pick a mix of letters and numbers in order to get a screen name that's still available. After choosing a screen name, set up a password and security question.

Agree to the terms of service. Before you can finish opening up your account, you have to agree to the terms of service listed by AIM. For instance, you need to be over 13 to open an AIM account.

Download AIM onto your desktop. Before you can start using your new AIM account, you'll need to download the software onto your computer. Return to the homepage after opening up your account and select "Install Now."

Tips

After you open your AIM account, you can edit your profile and buddy info. Add or search for AIM friends, select a buddy icon and more after downloading AIM onto your computer.
