How to Share a YouTube Song on Someone's Facebook Profile
By Jeff Grundy
With chat and private messages, Facebook helps you stay in contact with friends and relatives regardless of where they live. Nevertheless, sometimes you may want to share something directly on a Facebook friend’s timeline. Depending on your friend’s Facebook privacy settings, you may or may not be able to post comments or media on the person’s timeline. If your friend allows others to post on his timeline, though, you can share YouTube videos with the friend so that he can view them without having to leave Facebook or even leave his own profile page.
Step 1
Open your Web browser and go to a YouTube page that contains video you want to share on your friend's Facebook timeline page. Double-click the URL address in the address bar of the browser to select the entire link, and then press “Ctrl-C” on the keyboard to copy the link to the Windows Clipboard.
Step 2
Navigate to the Facebook home page. Log in to your Facebook account with your registered email address and password.
Step 3
Type the name of your friend in the search box at the top of your Facebook home or timeline page. Click the profile photo or name of your friend when the link appears in the results drop-down list beneath the search box. If your friend is online, click his name in the “Online Friends” list on the right side of your timeline page and then click your friend’s name at the top of the chat window to go to his timeline page.
Step 4
Click inside the text box labeled “Write something…” beneath the Post and Photo links. Press the “Ctrl-V” keys to paste the YouTube video link inside the text box. Wait a few seconds for the Facebook website to retrieve a thumbnail image of the video on the YouTube page automatically. After a few seconds, the thumbnail of the YouTube video moves to the bottom of the text box and creates a blank space for comments or text above the image.
Step 5
Enter a comment about the video or other greeting that you wish your friend to see along with the thumbnail and link of the YouTube video. Click the “Post” button to submit the video link and post it and the comment or text on your friend’s timeline. Alternatively, click the “Post” button without entering a comment to display the thumbnail and caption link only.

Tips
- If your Internet connection is slow, the Facebook website may not retrieve the thumbnail image from YouTube automatically. Nevertheless, if you paste the URL of the YouTube video into the “Write something…” text box and click “Post,” the thumbnail and link should appear after the new post appears on your friend’s timeline. However, if this happens, you won’t be able to post a comment with the video simultaneously. If the Facebook site does not retrieve the thumbnail and caption link automatically, you can comment on the shared video by clicking the “Comment” link beneath the post once Facebook updates the person’s timeline page.
Warnings
- If you do not see a “Write something…” text box on the timeline page of your friend, it means his privacy settings prevent you from posting on his Timeline. The friend may block posting by all Facebook friends, selected friends or may only allow certain friends to post on his timeline. If you cannot post directly to the friend’s timeline, you can still share a YouTube video by pasting the link for the clip into a private message and pressing “Enter” or clicking “Reply.”
