How to Set Up UltraVNC

By Joel Douglas

The free, open-source program UltraVNC lets you remotely access another computer over a network or the Internet. It displays the desktop of the remote computer on your screen and lets you control it with a keyboard and mouse as if you were sitting in front of the computer. According to Soft Sea, UltraVNC secures remote access connections with password protection and an optional data stream encryption plug-in. Use UltraVNC to troubleshoot a computer, run programs, access files or print documents from a remote location.

Step 1

Download UltraVNC on the computer you want to access remotely as well as every computer you intend to access it from. (See Resources.)

Step 2

Install UltraVNC on the computer you want to access remotely. Check "UltraVNC Server" and "Install" in the "Select Components" window. Choose "Register UltraVNC Server as a system service" and "Start or restart UltraVNC Service" in the "Select Additional Tasks" window. Complete the installation.

Step 3

Double-click the UltraVNC Server icon in the Windows system tray. Enable "Accept Socket Connections" under "Incoming Connections" in the "Current User Properties" menu. Enter the security password you will use for remote access and click "OK."

Step 4

Install UltraVNC on every computer you will use to access the UltraVNC Server. Check "UltraVNC Viewer" and "Install" in the "Select Components" window. Complete the installation.

Step 5

Start UltraVNC viewer. Enter the network IP address for the server computer in the "VNC Server" textbox. Check "Auto" under "Quick Options" to let UltraVNC Viewer automatically detect your network or Internet connection speed. Click "Connect" and, when prompted, enter the password you assigned to UltraVNC Server. You should see the desktop for the server computer displayed in the UltraVNC Viewer window.
