How to Set Up SonicWALL SSL-VPN
By Chad Anderson
SonicWALL provides a range of services and network devices that allow for the easy configuration and maintenance of a host of network services. Using SonicWALL's network appliances, you can easily set up and secure SSL VPN connections to your local domain. This will allow you to share networked documents and resources in a secure fashion over the public Internet. The Web-based user interface and Administration panel makes the adding of users and the configuration of the SSL VPN a simple task in comparison to other secure VPN solutions.
Log in to your Network Security Appliance through the Web interface. Go to the "Interfaces" tab and click the "Configure WAN" option. Check the "HTTPS" options under both "Management" and "User Login" in the WAN configuration's "General" settings tab. Click "OK" when you are done.
Click the "SSL VPN" tab from the left-hand side of the screen and click the "Client Settings" tab. Click the "WAN" link under this menu. Enter the start IP and end IP for your SSL VPN Client Address range. This will directly reflect what you already have set up on your Network Security Appliance for the LAN. Click "Default DNS Settings," unless you need a different DNS Server, to populate the "DNS Server 1" field with your current DNS settings. Enter the name of your "UserDomain" in the appropriate text field. Click "Accept" to save all of your preferences. Click "OK" when the confirmation message pops up.
Click the "Local Users" tab on the left-hand side of the configuration page. Click the "Add User..." button to create a new user. Configure the user's name and password under the "Settings" tab. Click the "Groups" tab and add any groups the user needs to be a part of for either organization or permissions. Make sure that you add the user to the "SSLVPN Services" group. Click the "VPN Access" tab and add the user to the "X0 Subnet" network. Click "OK" to save your changes and exit the Add User dialog. Add any additional users you may need on your SonicWALL SSL-VPN.
Log out of your Network Security Appliance administration panel to return to the login page. Click the link in the lower right-hand corner of the dialog that points you to the SonicWALL Virtual Office. Enter the user name and password you entered and click "Login" to access the SonicWALL Virtual Office. Download and install the provided NetExtender application. Double-click the NetExtender icon in your system tray once the installation is complete.
Enter the SSL-VPN Server's IP address, your user name, password and domain. Click "Connect" to launch NetExtender. Once you see "Connected" displayed in the Status portion of the NetExtender dialog, you will be able to access shared resources on the SSL-VPN.
