How to Set Up a New Hotmail Account

Hotmail is a web-based email service that allows users to send and receive messages and maintain a contacts list. Hotmail was acquired by Microsoft in 1997 and is now part of Microsoft Windows Live. Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail is a free service provided for both individuals and businesses. Before you use Hotmail or Windows Live, you must create an account and enter your personal information.


Step 1

Launch a Web browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. Type " in the address bar. Click on the "Sign Up" button.

Step 2

Type a username into the Hotmail Address field.

Step 3

Select either "" or "" from the drop-down menu after the "@" sign. This is the extension of the email account.

Step 4

Type a password into the Create a Password field. The password must be at least six characters. Retype the same password in the Retype Password field. Type an alternate email address in the Alternate Email Address field.

Step 5

Fill in the form fields for First Name, Last Name, Country/Region, Zip Code, Gender and Birth Date.

Step 6

Type the confirmation letters and numbers at the bottom of the page into the provided text field. The "Audio" link can be clicked for the code to be spoken by the computer if the letters cannot be deciphered, or click on the "New" link to generate a new confirmation code.

Step 7

Click "I accept" to create the account.
