Sony Bravia HDTVs are equipped with all the connections required for use with a home theater system. Home theater systems generally require two connections on an HDTV in order to work properly: an HDMI port and an optical Audio-Out port. The HDMI port on your Bravia HDTV is used to transmit the video signal from your TV into your home theater system, and the optical port is used to transmit the audio signal from your TV to your home theater speakers.

Step 1

Plug an HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of your home theater system's amplifier.

Step 2

Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into an HDMI port on the back of your Sony Bravia HDTV. It doesn't matter which HDMI port you use here.

Step 3

Insert one end of an optical audio cable into the port labeled "Digital Audio Out (Optical)" on the back of your Sony Bravia HDTV. There will only be one of these ports.

Step 4

Insert the other end of the optical cable into an Optical In port on the back of your home theater system's amplifier. It doesn't matter which optical port you use here.

Step 5

Turn on your Sony Bravia HDTV and home theater system. Switch the output mode on your Bravia HDTV to the HDMI port into which you plugged the cable. Switch the input mode on your home theater system to the desired input mode for what you want to watch (to hear audio originating from the TV itself, switch the input mode to the optical input). Sound will now come through your home theater speakers and the video will be shown on your Sony Bravia HDTV.
