How to Set Up Streaming Video for Home Security

by Mitchell White

You don't need to go out and buy new cameras and monitoring equipment to get a simple video monitoring setup going from your home computer. By downloading some free software, you can use your computer's web camera to "stream" video to a private website online that you can then visit from another computer anywhere you want in order to keep an eye on your home while you're away.

Download a program that can help you stream video of your webcam. Examples include Webcam Monitor and Watcher (see "Resources"). Click on the link below, and then click on "Download Now" when the new page loads.

Install the file you download by opening it. This will usually include choosing a directory and agreeing to a license agreement.

Begin the monitoring program when ready. Click on "Add camera" to choose and add the webcam you have hooked up to your computer. Click on "Next" through each screen and then select "Show preview" to make sure your webcam is working properly. You should now see video of what the webcam is picking up.

Click on the "Start broadcasting" button or something similar. Your video is now streaming online. Click on the "log" tab to get the address of where the video is streaming. You can use this address to watch the live stream at any time.
