Due to their experience or natural mathematical ability, some folks have no problem using either picas or inches to design documents using InDesign. If you are among the rest of the population, however, you will probably want make things simpler by changing InDesign's default font and ruler units from picas to the inches you are more accustomed to. You can change InDesign's horizontal and vertical measurement units using the Preferences dialog.

Step 1

Click the "Edit" menu, "Preferences," and then "Units and Increments."

Step 2

Click the drop-down list labeled "Horizontal" and select "Inches" instead of "Picas."

Step 3

Click the drop-down list labeled "Vertical" and select "Inches."

Click the "OK" button to make your change permanent.

  • Leave InDesign's configuration as is and convert picas to inches mathematically. Divide the number of picas by six to get inches. For example, twelve picas equals two inches. Conversely, convert inches to picas by multiplying the number of inches by six.
