By default, a wireless phone registered on the Verizon Wireless network can have only one phone number. If you share the phone with someone else and you'd like to have two separate phone numbers, however, an online service called Google Voice can help you accomplish this. After setting up your Verizon Wireless mobile phone with Google Voice, the service provides you with an additional phone number that can also ring your phone.

Step 1

Visit the Google Voice home page and sign in with your Google account. If you don't have one, click the "Sign Up" button and follow the step-by-step instructions to create an account (link in Resources).

Step 2

Click the "I want a new number" button to generate a new Google Voice phone number. To get a local number, type in your area code, zip code, or city name into the field provided. You can also create a number that uses a certain phrase or number by typing into the "Word, phrase, number" field. Click the "Search numbers" button to see any available numbers.

Step 3

Click the radio button next to the number you'd like to use and then click "Continue."

Step 4

Enter a four-digit number to use as a voicemail PIN into the "Enter PIN" field, and then enter that same number into the "Confirm PIN" field. Click the check box to accept Google's privacy policy, and then click "Continue."

Step 5

Enter the phone number of your Verizon Wireless device into the "Phone Number" box. Click the "Phone Type" drop-down box, and then click "Mobile." Click "Continue."

Step 6

Click the "Call me now" button. Google Voice will call your Verizon Wireless phone to make sure you are the legitimate owner of the phone. Enter the verification code displayed on the screen using your phone's keypad. After your phone is confirmed and you hang up, your Google Voice number will be configured to work with your Verizon Wireless phone. Anytime a call is placed to your Google Voice phone number, your Verizon Wireless phone will ring.
