The Facebook chat feature allows you to communicate with people on your list of friends via instant messages. The chat sidebar is displayed on the left side of each page and, after you engage in a chat with someone, the box is shown at the bottom of the screen. If you prefer not to chat with people on Facebook or find the chat box obtrusive, it is possible to remove this feature. If you close the chat box, it will re-open when someone sends you a message, but deactivating the chat feature will get rid of it completely.

Step 1

Navigate to the Facebook website and sign in to your account.

Step 2

Click the "X" button on the top-right corner of any open chat box to close it.

Step 3

Click the gear-shaped "Options" button at the bottom of the chat sidebar and then click "Turn Off Chat" from the list of options.

Click the "Hide Sidebar" button at the bottom of the chat side bar to remove it from sight.

  • Click the "Chat (Off)" button on the bottom-right corner of any Facebook page and then click "Turn On Chat" if you want to make use of this feature again.
