How to Reset a Password for Linksys

by Chris Hoffman

Linksys routers plug into a cable modem or other Internet connection device and create a local network, allowing all PCs and devices to share a single Internet connection. Linksys routers have Web-page-based configuration interfaces, and accessing them requires a password. The password is needed to configure a variety of settings, such as the wireless network security settings and pass-phrase. If you want to configure your Linksys router and have forgotten the password, you can reset it. This requires resetting all the settings on the Linksys router to the factory default settings, so you'll have to re-enter your custom settings.

Locate the small, red "Reset" button on the back of the Linksys router. The reset button is depressed in the router so that it can't be accidentally pressed.

Press the reset button and hold it down for 30 seconds. Depending on your router, you may have to press the reset button with a narrow tool, such as a bent paper-clip.

Release the reset button. The password is reset to the default password, "admin."
