How to Reset an AKO Password and Phone Numberby Shea Laverty
Army Knowledge Online is an online service for members of the United States Army and Department of Defense, providing email and directory services among other tools. Like most online services with a password-protected login system, you can reset your password if you lose it or your login credentials are compromised. Resetting your password is easy, and you can accomplish the task in a number of ways.
Starting Password Reset
Launch your Web browser and go to the AKO password reset screen (link in Resources).
Enter your AKO user ID or the non-AKO email address you provided during registration into the field and click "Go."
Select a password reset method. The AKO website gives you up to four options, although not all options may not be available, depending on your account settings.
Click the "Go" button by the option to "Reset Your Password Using Your CAC."
Enter your CAC PIN number when prompted. If your password has expired, you will be prompted to immediately create a new one. If you've forgotten your password, you will be taken to the password management screen.
Create a new password that meets the requirements listed on the screen. Type it into the "New Password" field and then retype it into the "Confirm New Password" field.
Click "Submit." Your password will be reset and changed. Use your new password to log in to AKO.
Click the "Go" button next to the option to "Reset Your Password Via Email." A message will appear instructing you to watch for an email at your non-AKO email address.
Open another browser window or tab and navigate to your non-AKO email inbox.
Open the email message from sender "firstname.lastname@example.org" with the subject "The Army Portal/Lost Password" and click the link inside. If the message doesn't appear in your inbox, check your Spam/Junk folder to make sure it hasn't been erroneously flagged. If the link isn't clickable, it can be copied and pasted into the address bar of your browser.
Enter your AKO user ID when prompted and click "Next."
Enter or confirm your profile information in the form, and then reset your password when prompted.
Enter and confirm a new password.
Click the "Go" button by the option to "Reset Your Password Via Text Message."
Check the phone associated with your account. An entry key will be texted to you; it will expire after one hour. This message may take several minutes to arrive.
Enter the key from the message into the field and click "Next."
Update or confirm your profile information when prompted and select to reset your password.
Enter and confirm a new password.
Click the "Go" button by the option to "Reset Your Password by Answering Your Security Questions."
Enter and confirm the answers to all three of your security questions, and then click "Next." Note that all answers are case sensitive.
Enter or confirm your organizational information on the next page and click "Next."
Enter and confirm your new password.

- AKO support can be reached by DSN at 312-560-1110. Ask the operator to connect you to 866-335-2769.
- If you lose your password frequently or want a more secure login, you can set your AKO account to "CAC Only Login," which will remove passwords and require your CAC for all logins.
