How to Replace a Network Adapter for a Laptop
By Alexander Poirier
A laptop's network adapter allows the laptop to gain access to the Internet for web browsing and general Internet usage. Users can replace or upgrade their network adapters by simply opening up their laptops, either by removing the keyboard or removing the back panel of the device, disconnecting the old network adapter and inserting a new network adapter in its place.
Keyboard Removal Method
Step 1
Pry the plastic hinge cover that hides the laptop's hinge from the laptop unit.
Step 2
Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws underneath the hinge cover that hold the keyboard in place.
Step 3
Remove the keyboard and locate the network adapter. See your laptop's service manual for its exact location.
Step 4
Unplug the white and black antenna wires.
Step 5
Pull apart the clamps that hold the network adapter in place and remove the network adapter.
Step 6
Insert the new network adapter in its place and plug the antenna wires back in.
Step 7
Replace the keyboard and secure it with the screws removed in Step 2. Snap the hinge cover back into place.
Back Panel Removal Method
Step 1
Flip the laptop over and locate the screws that hold the back compartment panel in place.
Step 2
Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to unscrew the screws and remove the back compartment panel. Locate the network adapter per the laptop's service manual.
