How to Repair Garmin Nuvi Units

by J. Johnson

If your Garmin Nuvi isn't working properly, you might be able to repair the problem yourself instead of sending it off to the company to be fixed. Sometimes, proper cleaning is all you need to get it working again, while other times, certain settings might need restored or the way you are using the unit might need to be altered. However, because Garmin Nuvi parts can't be found in stores, you'll always have Garmin's repair department to fall back on for the most serious problems.

Clean the suction cup of your Garmin Nuvi if you can't get it to mount onto your windshield. Clean the surface, as well as the surface of the windshield, with rubbing alcohol. Both surfaces must be dry before mounting.

Let the battery of your Garmin Nuvi unit die. This can help if the battery gauge seems to be reading incorrectly. Once it's dead, charge it back up again without stopping.

Remain still while your Garmin Nuvi is searching for the satellite signal. Moving around could disrupt a signal in process. If after several minutes, your unit has not found the signal, try a new location away from all tall structures, such as trees and buildings.

Press the power key to turn off the unit to start calibrating the screen. This can help if the screen is unresponsive. Press the upper left-hand corner of the touch screen with one finger, and turn the unit back on with another. Keep pressing the power key until the screen changes. Keep your finger on the upper left-hand corner until the calibration screen appears.

Send your device to Garmin for repairs if you cannot fix it yourself. This will involve boxing it and shipping it to Garmin International. A Garmin representative can provide you with the current address, as well as a return authorization and dock door number, both of which must be printed on the outside of the package. Call (800) 800-1020 or (913) 397-8200 to speak with a Garmin representative, explain the problem with your Nuvi, and get further instructions. If your unit is not covered under warranty, you can also arrange payment.

  • check Find out if your Garmin Nuvi is under warranty by reading the "Limited Warranties" page of the Garmin website. If it's not, you can get an estimate for repairs from the Garmin "Out of Warranty" page.
