Removing a Person From Google Chat
By Johnno Cary
Distractions can make your workday more difficult, especially when they're on your computer screen. Google chat, an instant messaging program and group chat app accessible through Gmail, Google Hangouts and Google Talk, allows you to talk to Google contacts at your whim. While you can remove people from Google Talk without removing them from your contact list, that isn't true in Gmail. It doesn’t matter is you use a Microsoft or Android device, or an iPhone, in Gmail itself, you only have the option to delete a contact from your google account to remove them. If a contact is becoming a problem, remove them from your messenger so they can't see when you're online or offline, you don’t get notifications and you won’t recieve any chat invitations from them on your gmail account and vice versa.
Google Talk
Click the "Start" button and type "Google Talk" in the search bar. Click on "Google Talk" under programs and log in with your ID and password.
Right-click the name of the person you want to remove in your chat history or chat list.
Click "Remove..."
Click "OK" to confirm.
Note: This should also delete conversations and google chat messages that you have with this person, but will leave Google Group conversations you share active.
Gmail
Navigate to Gmail or the Gmail mobile app(see Resources). Enter your username and password, then click "Sign In".
Click on "Gmail" near the upper left and choose "Contacts."
Check the box next to the name of the contact you want to remove.
Press "More," then click "Delete Contact." This will remove the person permanently from your address book, not just from chat.
Tips
If you don't want to remove a contact, but don't want him to see you online, hover over his chat ID, click "More Options" and select "Block."
