How to Remove Unwanted Programs Running in the Background

by Sabrina Ashley

Many of the programs you have installed on your computer are set to automatically run on start-up. In many cases these programs are not needed. Eliminating these programs can free up memory and improve performance. Remove these unwanted programs in just a few steps.

Click the "Control," "Alt" and "Delete" keys at the same time to bring up the Task Manager page.

Click on the "Process" tab at the top of the page.

Scroll down the list of processes and look for any programs that are not needed. This is accomplished by looking under the header 'User Name." Any processes that are "SYSTEM" files should be left alone. These programs are important for the operation of the computer. Any other programs can be removed if not currently needed.

Click on any process that is not a System program. This highlights the process. Click the "End Process" button at the bottom of the Task Manager.

Repeat Step 4 for all the unwanted processes you want to eliminate.

Close Task Manager.
