How to Reformat a Drive in a Direct TV DVR

Direct TV is a company that provides provides satellite television programming. With Direct TV, you can access, program and save television programs using a Direct TV DVR. These devices come with built-in hard drives that store the television shows and user settings. If you are experiencing problems with your Direct TV DVR, or simply want a fresh start with your DVR, you can reformat the hard drive. This will erase all data and settings on the drive and restore the DVR to factory default settings.

Step 1

Turn on both your Direct TV DVR and your television. You need to change settings on your DVR and view the changes on your television screen.

Step 2

Press the "Menu" button on your Direct TV remote control. This is located directly below the "Down" arrow on the remote.

Step 3

Select the "Reset" option from the list of menu options. Use the "Up" and "Down" arrows on the remote to select the option.

Step 4

Select "Clear and Delete Everything" from the "Reset" menu options. A warning appears indicating that all content will be removed.

Step 5

Press the "Down" arrow three times and then "Enter" on your remote to continue past the warning screen.

Step 6

Allow the Direct TV DVR to reformat. Because the hard drive you are reformatting is relatively large, it may take a while to reformat the entire drive.
