Turn on both your Direct TV DVR and your television. You need to change settings on your DVR and view the changes on your television screen.
Press the "Menu" button on your Direct TV remote control. This is located directly below the "Down" arrow on the remote.
Select the "Reset" option from the list of menu options. Use the "Up" and "Down" arrows on the remote to select the option.
Select "Clear and Delete Everything" from the "Reset" menu options. A warning appears indicating that all content will be removed.
Press the "Down" arrow three times and then "Enter" on your remote to continue past the warning screen.
Allow the Direct TV DVR to reformat. Because the hard drive you are reformatting is relatively large, it may take a while to reformat the entire drive.
