How to Reduce SWF File Size

by Contributor

Although they are much smaller than their FLA counterparts, SWF files can still be somewhat bulky and might need to be smaller to meet specific size requirements. SWF file size can be reduced by taking a few extra steps in Adobe Flash before exporting the FLA file. The compression tools built into Flash attempt to make a smaller file overall and optimize download time.

Step 1

Open the FLA to the SWF file in Adobe Flash. Make sure to limit the number of elements if possible. Every new image, font and line adds to your file size.

Step 2

Navigate to "File," then "Publish Settings."

Step 3

Check "Compress Movie" in the "Publish Settings" window.

Check "Generate Size Report." This will tell you how your file size is determined. Select "Publish."

  • If you have audio in your Flash file, you can also adjust the audio stream and event settings in the "Publish Settings" window. Changing them to MP3 from a WAV and from stereo to mono will decrease file size. If embedding a movie into an FLA file, also consider streaming it as an FLV and pr. The options are available in the "Import Movie" wizard that comes up when embedding a movie in your Flash file.
