How to Record From Slingbox to a Disk
By Marshal M. Rosenthal
The Slingbox is designed to transfer a video signal--for example, a television broadcast--over a network to a computer or a portable display that can access a web browser. To record the video that the Slingbox is transferring to a PC's hard disc drive (HDD), use a video capture program. There are a number of these programs--some available for free and others free to try out on a limited time basis--which operate in a similar fashion to copy what is being seen to the hard drive. No additional hardware is needed.
Download a video capture program to the desktop--for example, Debut Video Capture software, BSR Screen Recorder or My Screen Recorder (see Resources). Double-click the file once downloaded to start its installation. Follow the menu commands to finish the installation. Restart the PC.
Launch the default web browser by selecting it from the "Start" > "All Applications" pop-up menu. Enter the unique web address that is yours for watching content being transferred from the Slingbox through a network.
Launch the video capture program selecting it from the "Start" > "All Applications" pop-up menu.
Select "Preferences" or "Save To" from the "File" drop-down menu at the top of the program's main screen. Select "Desktop" from the "Locations" drop-down menu near the middle of the window that appears. Name the recording that you are going to save to the hard disc drive in the "Name" column at the top of the window. Click the "Open" button at the bottom of the window to return to the program's main screen.
Select "WMV" or "AVI" from the "Format" or "File Type" drop-down menu at the top of the program's main screen--this menu may also be available instead as a drop-down menu on the program's main screen itself.
Position the video window that is next to the screen so that it is over the video that is being displayed on the web browser--the mouse is used to pull the video over to and onto the web browser.
Press the "Record" button on the video capture program's main screen to record the video that is coming from the Slingbox and being displayed on the web browser.
Click the "Stop" button on the video capture program's main screen when you are done. Depending upon the program, the video has been recorded to the PC's hard disc drive (HDD) in real-time, or has been stored in memory and so must be copied to the HDD using the "Save To" or "Save" command from the "File" drop-down menu or from a drop-down menu on the program's main screen.
