The Purpose of the Storage Expansion Slot on the Acer Aspire One
By Ian Graham
The Acer Aspire One is a mini-notebook, or netbook, with an 8.9-inch screen. It was introduced in 2008, with the base model featuring an 8 GB solid state drive, while more expensive models offered larger conventional hard drives.
Card Readers
The Acer Aspire One features dual card readers with one on either side. The card reader on the right is compatible with multiple memory cards, including SD and xD cards and Memory Sticks. The one on the left, labeled the Storage Expansion Slot, accepts only SD memory cards.
Storage Expansion Slot
The multiple card reader slot on the right of the Acer Aspire One netbook is intended for the quick transfer of files from one device to another such as photographs from a digital camera. Deeper than the standard card reader, the Storage Expansion Slot holds an SD card without it protruding from the edge of the computer. This makes it ideal as an additional storage drive on the computer, with the memory card left in the computer until it is full or needs to be used elsewhere.
Practical Uses
Because it is a removable drive, a card in the Storage Expansion Slot is an excellent place to save seldom-used files that can then be removed when the SD card is full and replaced with a different card with available space. Conversely, users who frequently switch back and forth between their laptop and a desktop computer in the office or at home, can use the card in the Storage Expansion Slot for files they frequently transfer from one computer to the other.
