The Universal remote for Philips' DirecTV receivers can be programmed to also control your TV, DVD player and other components, minimizing the clutter and hassle of having to manage multiple remotes. While your remote can be programmed during your initial setup, loss of battery power or upgrading to a new TV may require that you reprogram your remote. You can program the remote in two ways, by inputting the setup codes for your TV or by scanning through codes manually.

Programming with Setup Codes

Step 1

Locate the setup code for your TV or other device. These codes can be found in your DirecTV user manual or on the DirecTV website. There you will be asked to select your remote control model, located on the upper-left side of your remote. Once selected, enter the brand name and model number of the TV or other device that you are trying to program to your Philips DirectTV remote. Click "Search" to locate the proper code or codes for your device.

Step 2

Slide the selector switch to the "TV" setting. If you want to program another device, such as a DVD player or surround-sound system, select either the "AV1" or "AV2" positions.

Step 3

Turn on your TV, or the other device that you are attempting to program.

Step 4

Press and hold the "Mute" and "Select" buttons at the same time, until the green light underneath the "TV" icon on your remote flashes twice, then release the buttons.

Step 5

Enter the five-digit setup code for your TV using the number keys on the remote. If the code was entered correctly, the green light under the "TV" selection on your remote will flash twice. Press the "Power" button on your remote while aiming the remote at your TV. If the TV powers down, write down the code for future reference. If your TV has multiple codes listed, you may need to try each code until you find one that works with your specific model. Repeat this process, inputting a new code into the remote each time until your remote successfully powers off your TV. If none of the known codes work with your TV, you may be able to search for the code.

Searching for Your Code

Step 1

Turn on your TV or other device that you would like to control with the Philips DirecTV remote.

Step 2

Move the slide switch to TV, AV1 or AV2.

Step 3

Press and hold the "Mute" and "Select" buttons until the green light under the switch position blinks twice.

Step 4

Enter the code "9910" to search for satellite setup codes, "9911" for TV setup codes, "9912" for VCR or DVD setup codes or "9913" for stereo or surround-sound setup codes.

Step 5

Point the remote at the TV or device that you are trying to program and press the "Channel Up" button slowly and repeatedly until the device turns off. Stop pressing the "Channel Up" button immediately after your TV or device turns off and press the "Select" key to lock the code into the remote.

Step 6

Verify the code by pressing and releasing the "Mute" and "Select" buttons and enter the code "990." To view the first digit in your code, press and hold the "1" button. Your remote will flash a number of times; these flashes will count out the first number of your device's setup code. Repeat this process, pressing and holding numbers 2-5 on the remote to retrieve the corresponding number associated with your device's setup code.
