How to Post Photos on the Web for Free

by Melissa Worcester

The web abounds with photo-sharing sites. Most work in a similar fashion: you sign up for a free membership and upload your photos. On Facebook, you can share your photos with friends. On Flickr, you can share them with friends, join groups, or even order prints, cards and photo books. Shutterfly is a full-service photo printing site that gives you the option of ordering prints, photo gifts and photo books, as well as sharing them via email or making a customizable web page for your friends and family to visit. Each site works a bit differently and offers various options, and all are easy to use.

Visit Facebook and log in to your Facebook account.

Click on "Photos" in the list of applications below your profile picture. Or, if you don't see "Photos" in the list, click on "More" and then click on "Photos" in the expanded list.

Click on the "+ Upload Photos" button at the top of the Facebook window.

Click on the blue "Select Photos" button in the box that pops up. Navigate to the photo on your computer, click on it and click on the "OK" button to select it.

Type in a name for the album you want to create and click on the "Create Album" button. Wait while the photo uploads and click on the "Publish Now" button to share the photo on Facebook.

Visit Flickr and sign in. You can sign in using your Yahoo ID or a Flickr account.

Click on "Choose Photos and Videos." Navigate to the photo you want to upload on your computer, click on it and click on the "OK" button.

Click on "Add More" to add another photo or on the "Upload Photos and Videos" button to upload the photo. Wait while the photo uploads.

Click on "Add a Description." Change the text in the "Title" field, and add tags to describe your photo, if desired. Click on the blue "Add" button to add each tag. When you are done with the title and description, click on the blue "Save" button at the bottom to return to your Flickr photostream.

Visit Shutterfly and sign in to your account.

Click on the "My Pictures" tab at the top, next to the Shutterfly logo. Click on the "Upload" button on the upper left, just below the Shutterfly logo.

Click on the "Choose Files" button near the top of the upload window that pops up. Navigate to the folder that contains the photo on your computer, click on it and click on the "OK" button. Then you can click on the "Choose Files" button to choose more files. When you've chosen all the photos, select whether to "create a new album" or "upload to an existing album" by clicking on the round radio button next to your choice. Type in the name of the new album, or select the name of an existing album from the drop-down menu and click on the "Start" button to start the upload. Wait while the photos upload, which may take a few minutes. Click the link to close the window when the upload is completed.

Click on the "Share" button at the top of the Shutterfly page. You can then choose to email pictures, post them to your Share site or post to Facebook, MySpace or Blogger by clicking on one of these links directly below the row of tabs at the top of the page.

Click on "Email pictures." Click on the photos you want to email. As you select each one, a box will appear around those you've selected and a small box with a check mark will be at the top left corner of that box. When you're done, you can un-select any by clicking to clear the check mark for a specific photo, if desired, and then click on the "Next" button at the top right corner. On the next page, type in the email addresses of those you want to receive the photo, and type in a subject and a message. Click "Send" to send the message with the photos attached.

Click on "Post to Share site." Select the photos you want to add as you did for the email procedure, above. Click on the "Add to site" button at the bottom right when you've selected all the photos you wan to add. The photos will be added to your Shutterfly Share site, a customizable web page where you can share your Shutterfly photos and creations with friends and family.

Click on "Post to Facebook, MySpace or Blogger." Select the photos you want to share using the same procedure as for the email. Then click on the "Next" button at the top right corner. Type in a title and description for your post, and click on the "Next" button below the text fields. Select your choice of social media website on which to share the photo. Log in to the site, if necessary, in the box that pops up, or just click on the "Share" button to post the entry.
