by Michael Jones

A .wps document is a file saved using Microsoft Works. Unfortunately, .wps files aren't compatible with Microsoft Word, so you will have to convert them before they can be opened. Converting the file is really simple and you don't need any additional software. All you have to do is open the file in Microsoft Works and then save it as a Word document. By doing this, you will be able to open the file in Microsoft Word.

Open your file in Microsoft Works.

Go to "File" and click on "Save as."

Type a new name for your file so it doesn't get confused with the Microsoft Works file.

Select "Word 97-2000 & 6.0/95 - RTF (*.doc)" in the "Save as Type" box, and then click "Save."

Close Microsoft Works and open Microsoft Word. You will now be able to open the file in Microsoft Word.

  • check This will work for Microsoft Works 6.0, Works 7.0, Works 8.0 and Works 9.0.
  • check If you don't have Microsoft Works on your computer, you will have to download the Works 6-9 Converter in order to open the document in Word. Once you install the software, you will be able to simply open the file in Microsoft Word without saving it as a Word document.
