How to Measure a Widescreen Monitor
By Lady Tiwanna
There are so many sizes and varieties of monitors available that you can drive yourself insane trying to figure out the differences. Fortunately, finding the measurements of a monitor is simple and can be done in a matter of seconds.
Widescreen LCD Monitor
Place the start of the tape measure at the bottom left of the monitor's viewable screen area, using the "inches" side of the tape measure.
Stretch the tape measure diagonally to the top right of the monitor's viewable screen area.
Hold the tape measure in place at both edges of the viewable screen area.
Read the measurement on the tape measure. The number given equals the number of inches diagonally across the monitor's viewable screen area, which is the measurement used for widescreen LCD monitors.
Widescreen CRT Monitor
Place the start of the tape measure at the bottom left edge of the monitor's casing, using the "inches" side of the tape measure.
Stretch the tape measure diagonally to the top right of the monitor's viewable screen area.
Hold the tape measure in place at both edges of the monitor.
Read the measurement on the tape measure. The number given equals the number of inches diagonally across the widescreen CRT monitor.

Tips
- As you can see, LCD monitors are measured by the viewable screen area, while CRT monitors are measured by the entire monitor--meaning that the actual screen of an 18" widescreen LCD monitor is bigger than that of a CRT with the same measurement.
