How to Manually Uninstall Scanner Utility for Microsoft Windows
By James T Wood
Fujitsu scanners use a program to interface between the scanner and Windows computers called Scanner Utility for Microsoft Windows (SUMW). This program was developed by Fujitsu and is only used on Fujitsu scanners. It is a TWAIN utility, which means that it provides interconnectivity between a computer and a scanner. It is not possible to install a new version of SUMW on top of an older version--the first version must be completely uninstalled prior to installing new software. Sometimes the automatic uninstallation will not work correctly, and the new software won't install. If that happens, you need to uninstall the SUMW manually.
Step 1
Click "Start" then "Control Panel" then click "Uninstall a Program." Scroll down until you see "Scanner Utility for Microsoft Windows" in the list then click on it. Press the "Uninstall" button at the top of the list. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation process.
Step 2
Restart your computer. If the SUMW is still not completely uninstalled, you will need to edit the registry settings on your computer to remove the last vestiges of the program. Click "Start" then type "Run" in the search bar and press "Enter." Type "regedit" and then press "Enter."
Step 3
Click "Edit" then "Find" and type "scanner util" into the search field, then press "Enter." Wait for the registry to search for your term. Look at what it finds to make sure that it relates to a Fujitsu Scanner Utility for Microsoft Windows. If it does, then press "Delete" on your keyboard and confirm that you want to delete the registry entry. Press "F3" to find the next entry. Delete all the registry entries that relate to the SUMW. Restart your computer.
