How to Make a Password Reset Disk

by WilliamHanz

A password reset disk can be created in Windows to reset the account password. This disk is the only way to reset the administrator account password without re-installing Windows on your computer. The password reset disk can also be used to reset the password of any other Windows account type. This disk is created as a preventive measure in case your password is lost.

Start your computer and log in to your Windows account. Click the "Start" button containing an image of the Windows logo on the left side of your task bar. Click "Control Panel" when the "Start" menu opens on your screen.

Click the icon that is labeled "User Accounts" in the window that opens. If there is no "User Accounts" option, click "User Accounts and Family Safety," and click the "User Accounts" button on the screen that opens.

Load a blank CD into your computer's CD or DVD drive. This can be a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R or DVD-RW disk. Close any prompt that opens asking you what you would like to do with the blank CD.

Click the "Create a password reset disk" link on the left side of the "User Accounts" window. Click the "Next" button in the window that pops up to begin creating the CD. Windows will create the password reset disk and notify you once the process has completed.
