How to Make It So Nobody Knows I'm on Facebook
By Alan Sembera
When you log in to Facebook your friends can view your online status by seeing your name in their Chat window. If you're not in the mood for chatting, or you don't want your boss to know you're on Facebook, you can go into stealth mode and turn off chat so that nobody can tell you're online. Once you make the change, you will always appear to be offline, even if you log off and return later.
Step 1
Click the "Chat" button at the bottom of your screen to bring up the Chat window.
Step 2
Click the gear icon at the top of the Chat window.
Step 3
Select "Turn Off Chat," and then click "Okay." Your Chat button will now display an "Off" status, and your friends won't see your name in their Chat windows.

Tips
- To come out of hiding just click the "Chat" button. You name will reappear in your friends' Chat windows.
- If you want to allow only certain friends to see you that you're online, select "Turn On Chat for Only Some Friends" in the Chat settings. You will be prompted to enter the names of the friends, or enter one of your friends lists. You can also choose to block certain friends by instead selecting "Turn On Chat for All Friends Except."
