How to Make MSN Mail My Default Program in Windows 7

by Jason Artman

Microsoft distributes an email client called Windows Live Mail as part of its Windows Live suite of desktop applications. The Windows Live email client is free, and with it you can set your MSN or other Windows Live email account as the default email account for your computer.

Download and install Windows Live Mail if you have not already done so. The older Outlook Express and Windows Mail email programs do not work with MSN, Hotmail or Live email addresses. After installing, enter your MSN user name and password to connect Windows Live Mail to your email account.

Click the Start button, and then click "Default Programs" above "Help and Support" on the right side of the Start menu.

Click "Set your default programs" at the top of the window.

Click "Windows Live Mail" under "Programs" on the left side of the window.

Click "Set this program as default" at the bottom of the window.

Click "OK."

Launch the Windows Live Mail shortcut, or click any email link in a Web browser. Windows Live Mail opens and utilizes your MSN email account.
