Updated December 09, 2019
Magic Jack is an inexpensive phone service that allows you to obtain phone service through the broadband Internet connection on your computer. Magic Jack gives you the option to set up the service using traditional phones, or to configure it so that you can talk through your computer.
Insert the Magic Jack dongle into an available USB port on your computer. Make sure it's working properly.
Attach your microphone or headset to your computer. Magic Jack phone service works well whether or not you use the computer speakers and a microphone or a headset. If you want your conversation to remain private, it's best to use the headset.
Click on the "Menu" icon at the top of the Magic Jack interface screen and select the first option "Switch to headset." If you click on the menu item and the first option is "Switch to telephone," don't do anything, your Magic Jack is already ready configured to speak through headphones.
Test out the Magic Jack connection. Call someone to see if it works.
Adjust the microphone and speaker volume as necessary during your test call. Click the "Menu" icon again and select "Volume/Headset Control" to invoke the volume control window. In the "Choose your device" option, make sure "Headset/Other" is selected and slide the "Speaker" and "Microphone" controls to adjust the volume.
Warnings
If you have Magic Jack configured for your headset, you won't hear it ring if you walk away from your computer unless you've set the volume to go through the speakers.
