Canon's Pixma line of printers offers multifunctional office printers to high-end photo printers. A busy office or art studio can go thorough ink quickly. Minimize your operating costs by refilling ink cartridges yourself. Some Pixma ink cartridges use a smart chip and some do not, but either way, the printer keeps track of printing activity and may cease printing when it thinks the cartridges the empty. You can manually get around this problem without necessarily having to reset the smart chip.

Black Ink Cartridges

Place the ink cartridge on some rags or paper towel to soak up any ink spillage. The cartridge label should be facing up.

Peel off the cartridge label. A small hole is revealed.

Drill the hole larger with the thumb drill.

Fill the syringe with 15 ml of black ink.

Insert the syringe needle into the hole you drilled. Empty the syringe into the cartridge slowly.

Place the label back on the cartridge if you want. You don't want to cover up the drilled hole, so you may need to cut the label.

Replace the ink cartridge in the Pixma printer. Follow the printer instructions to clean and align the cartridge.

Color Ink Cartridges

Place the color ink cartridge label side up on some rags or paper towel. Orient the cartridge so the label text is right side up.

Peel off the cartridge label. Three small holes are revealed.

Drill each hole larger with the thumb drill.

Fill each 10cc syringe with 5 ml of ink. Each color should have its own syringe.

Insert the magenta syringe into the hole at the top of the cartridge. Slowly depress the syringe to inject the ink into the cartridge.

Repeat for the cyan and yellow syringes. The cyan ink goes into the lower left hole, and the yellow ink goes into the lower right hole.

Reaffix the label to the cartridge, but don't cover up the drilled holes.

Replace the ink cartridge into the printer and follow its instructions for aligning and cleaning the cartridge.

Items you will need

  • Rags or paper towel

  • Thumb drill

  • Black, magenta, cyan and yellow ink

  • 30cc syringe

  • 3 10cc syringes

Wait eight hours before using the refilled cartridge to print. This allows the ink to completely saturate the sponge, improving printing results.

Override the "Empty cartridge" message by pressing the paper feed or "Stop/Reset" button for three to five seconds.
